Celebrating Ten Years of Signs Express Newcastle

As Signs Express Newcastle celebrates ten years in business this September, we caught up with centre owner Adam Greaves, who opened the centre in September 2016, to reflect on his journey so far, the highlights from the past decade, and his ambitions for the future.

When you first launched Signs Express Newcastle, what were your goals, and how have they evolved over time?

"When I first launched Signs Express Newcastle, my main goal was simple: I wanted to build a successful centre and create a business I could be proud of.

Before joining Signs Express, I had worked in manufacturing, and although I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone, it was still important to me to move into an industry where I could physically make something. Having previously worked in industrial environments, including shipyards and steelwork, the manufacturing side felt familiar, but many of the wider business elements were a big step for me.

I am not naturally the most socially confident person, so when I first opened the centre, I found myself focusing on industries I already knew well, particularly manufacturing. That helped me build confidence, develop strong customer relationships and grow from there.

From the beginning, providing quality solutions and building a strong reputation were core goals. I take great pride in what I do, so working hard, learning the ropes and paying close attention to detail were all crucial in helping build the reputation we have today.

As the business became more established, my confidence grew. That allowed me to broaden our customer base and move into new industries. While I would still not describe myself as hugely confident, the knowledge and experience I have built over the years mean I can now sell solutions effectively and feel confident in the service we provide."

What have been some of your proudest achievements over the past decade?

"Staying afloat! Starting a business from scratch is difficult, but keeping it trading, growing steadily and improving both turnover and profitability is something I am very proud of.

Navigating challenges such as Covid was also a huge achievement. We kept active, kept going and found niche solutions that worked for the circumstances we all found ourselves in.

Having loyal customers is another major source of pride for me. As someone who is not naturally confident, I am proud of the relationships I have built and the fact that customers return to us time and time again.

Once we have a customer, I would say 99% of the time we keep them for years to come. I am also proud that, after ten years, the business is still growing. That tells me we must be doing something right."

What does the team look like now compared with when you first started?

"The team has changed over the years, but with steady growth we now have a team of five, which works really well for us. It allows us to deliver an efficient service while maintaining the quality our customers expect.

As with any business, I quickly learnt that you cannot do everything alone. My team are incredible and support me all the way.

These days, I find myself more front of house, which I never thought would happen. I still get involved in a bit of artwork, sales and business development, but mostly I try to stay out of production!"

What do you believe has been the key to your success in the region?

"For us, it is quite simple: quality and service.

Price is second or third on the list. The priority is understanding what the customer needs and delivering a quality product with a strong level of service. That is what helps us stand out."

How has the signage industry changed over the last ten years, and how have you adapted?

"Because a large part of our customer base is within manufacturing, we still see strong demand for the types of solutions we have delivered for years. However, as technology has evolved and printers have developed, we have worked hard to stay relevant by exploring new materials and investing in new equipment.

Last year, we invested in a new HP Latex 630W printer, supplied by our supplier partner Papergraphics, which has brought a whole host of benefits for both the business and our customers.

Vehicle graphics is also a growing area for us, and we have explored digital signage too. Ultimately, we try to adapt around our customers’ requirements.

I have also learnt to outsource more, which might sound counterproductive, but over the years I have realised the importance of using the team’s time wisely. With excellent next-day service from our supplier partners, we do not need to do everything ourselves all the time.

Being tactical and freeing up time is important. Strong supplier relationships allow us to focus on higher-margin work and keep the business moving efficiently."

Why franchising, and why Signs Express?

"I have to admit, I did not initially realise Signs Express was a franchise when I first looked into the business ten years ago. For me, it was about location and finding a business opportunity that would allow me to physically make something while building a business I could be proud of.

As I went through my due diligence and learnt more about the model, I really liked the support available. It gave me confidence that, as one person, I did not have to be an expert in every area.

Further down the line, when I was kitting out the new unit and getting ready to open, I was back in that manufacturing environment and very much in my comfort zone. Going out to find customers was the daunting part, but with support from the Franchise Support Centre, and by putting myself out there, it has turned out alright!

I am definitely not a quitter, and after all this time, we are still doing alright."

How important has being part of the Signs Express network been to your growth?

"Some of the larger customers we work with have definitely come to us because of the Signs Express brand, and that has been crucial in certain areas.

People also like the fact that we offer local service and local pricing, while still being backed by a recognised national brand and a strong reputation for quality.

From my perspective, it is also the day-to-day parts of running a business that are made that little bit easier. Things like branded paperwork, systems, processes and efficiencies all make a difference. They have allowed me to focus more of my time on actually growing the business."

What kind of support have you received as a franchisee, and how has that helped you along the way?

"I hate social media, and I have no idea about marketing, but the Franchise Support Centre does, and that support has been critical to me.

Having people around me who understand the areas I am less confident in has made a big difference over the years."

What advice would you give to someone considering investing in a Signs Express franchise?

"If you have the right mindset and you are willing to go for it, give it a shot."

Looking ahead, what are your plans for the future of the business?

"I have just renewed for another ten-year term with Signs Express, and my plan is more of the same, but with renewed energy. I’m also thrilled to see long-term staff member Stephen Handy join me in business ownership going forward.

I feel motivated to push the business forward and grow even more over the next couple of years. I have a strong team behind me, with Steve in particular helping to drive sales.

At the same time, while we look to grow the customer base, it is important to me that we continue to look after the loyal customers who have supported us over the past ten years."
