A Day in the Life of Signs Express (Portsmouth)

Wednesday 6th January 2016

Jane Wiles and Ray Allenby took over as franchisees of Signs Express (Portsmouth) in January 2015. They have hit the ground running and are continuously growing their customer base and exceeding targets. Jane tells us what a typical day involves for her:

Our day starts at 8am with a production meeting over a lovely cuppa! This gives the team a chance to highlight any queries with current jobs and we agree a schedule for production. Our production board is then written up first thing with everyone’s names allocated to their jobs for that day. Shane is our production supervisor so we make him fully aware of the tasks that need completing. He then delegates the jobs to the relevant area, i.e. the artwork department or application.

After this, I catch up on emails and calls, and chat with anyone who comes in to enquire. The morning also involves processing any new orders and pricing for new enquiries. We are lucky to have such a large supplier database which our procurement team at HQ monitor to make sure we’re getting the best deals; this allows us to obtain the most competitive prices for our customers.

We are a fast paced office, so we deal with incoming calls and enquiries all the time. We pride ourselves on a quick response time and meeting our customer’s exact needs. My favourite part of the job is liaising with customers and building strong relationships, which is really important.

I’ll often want to update our website with items such as pictures and news stories, in which case I’ll have a chat with the marketing team at HQ who are always on hand to help with this.

We have a mid-day meeting to see how production is coming along, we assess everything and re-plan if necessary. This is a great way of staying on top of all orders and making sure we’re on schedule.

My afternoon is split between paperwork, processing supplier and customer invoices, and customer visits. For anything I’m unsure on, the technical support team at HQ are a great help, and make sure we’ve got all the information we need.

Jane and Ray

We have a busy diary meeting existing clients at their sites to assess requirements, as well as meeting potential new clients to advise them of the wide range of products & services we offer.

We also get a steady flow of customers that drop in to see us and show us their new vehicles that need signwriting. This is great for us as it enables us to show them around the centre, in particular our specialist vehicle bay, and gives us an opportunity to discuss designs over another cuppa!

Our day finishes at about 5 – 5:30 at which point we check we are on schedule with everything and make sure that the centre is ready for the following day.

Whilst this is a typical day, no two days are the same which is fantastic and keeps us on our toes. On a larger scale, we are driving our business forward by investing in new equipment and staff training. Our aim is to be the best at what we do and we will not compromise on quality, we want all of our staff to take great pride in the work we do. We are constantly exceeding our targets, and on a lighter note, are planning a night out bowling to reward the team for all their hard work!
