Celebrating Scottish Franchise Week

Wednesday 11th May 2016

Scottish Franchise Week (SFW) begins on the 16th of May and is an excellent time to celebrate franchise success stories across Scotland as well as to promote franchising to those that may not have considered it before.

This year, the SFW is focusing on ‘Unleashing the entrepreneur within’, a fantastic message for those with the determination, drive and passion for becoming business owners with the ongoing support and benefits of an established brand that franchising offers.

Graham Casey Signs Express Glasgow 025We caught up with Graham Casey, owner of Signs Express (Glasgow) to provide some insight in to the world of franchising in Scotland.

Graham bought the existing Glasgow centre in 2008,  that had originally launched in May 1995 and has been going from strength to strength ever since. Prior to joining our franchise network, he worked as a Main Board Director of a UK PLC and decided to take the plunge and tap in to his entrepreneurial spirit to become his own boss whilst accessing the experience of others by choosing an established franchise.

“I chose Signs Express as my background was in printing. Before deciding I met with ex colleagues who had purchased a franchise and also had the opportunity to visit two existing Signs Express centres. Glasgow already had an established franchise centre available and was in a city I love and had chosen to call home”.

The Signs industry is dynamic, creative and diverse meaning no two days are ever the same. “A typical day involves meeting prospective customers, existing clients and occasionally suppliers. Every day brings a different challenge, but that is what makes it exciting” Graham commented.

Becoming a franchisee really can change your life. Graham continued, “My life has changed considerably since taking over the business. My previous incarnation meant that I travelled a lot and was very rarely at home during the week, now I am at home most nights”.

Franchising in Scotland is at an all-time high, with £800 Million being contributed to the Scottish economy, a 14% increase in two years. This growth is set to continue, with the British Franchise Association (BFA) predicting that franchising could be worth as much as £1 Billion to the Scottish economy by 2020.

New franchisee Glasgow 012Graham described his experiences with the current market in Scotland.
“The market varies from month to month and as with any business one or two orders can mean that the business changes from being fairly quiet to being extremely busy. Due to the dedication of all members of the team the business has expanded over the years and now operates from a 6,000ft custom built unit. We always ensure that every customer receives consistently good customer service and high quality products”

When asked what his plans for the future were Graham commented, “My plans for the future are to spend more time with my grandchildren and less time at work thanks to the team I have in place. I will look to sell the business in a few years’ time and look forward to retirement”.

There are many benefits to joining a franchise such as a proven business model and strong brand as well as the training and support you receive.
